Aug. 11

The Missouri Department of Transportation will make the following traffic changes as part of the I-35 and Route 152 Improvement Project in Liberty, MO. As a reminder, motorists should use signed detours and/or find alternate routes. All work is weather dependent. 

  • Crews will intermittently halt all traffic at the intersection of Route 152/ Kansas St. and Conistor St. from 9:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18 for the removal of temporary traffic signals 
  • Crews will close one lane of northbound and southbound I-35 at Route 152 from 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19 until 5 a.m. Friday, Sept. 20 for installation of rumble strips

Aug. 2

The off ramp from northbound I-35 WILL NOT be closed this weekend! However there are some other changes to aware of this weekend and in the coming weeks:

-- Northbound I-35 will be reduced to one lane nightly both Friday, Aug. 2 & Saturday, Aug. 3 from 7 pm – to 5:30 am. The shifting traffic may cause delays and backups at the northbound off ramp.

-- Coming in the next few weeks, traffic on Kansas Street will not be able to turn south onto Conistor and northbound traffic on Conistor will not be able to access Kansas Street.

July 12 - 17
There will be nightly lane closures July 12 - 17 on north- and southbound I-35 so the contractor can set girders and deck panels on the larger of the two bridges. The schedule for lane closures is as follows:

  • Friday, July 12 - outside lane of southbound I-35
  • Saturday, July 13 - both lanes of southbound I-35
  • Saturday, July 13 - outside land of northbound I-35  
  • Monday, July 15 through Wednesday, July 17 - various lane closures on both north- and southbound I-35 NB and SB I-35 various lanes for remaining deck panels and overhangs

June 23 - 29 
Work continues on many fronts this week, including continued work on the bridge and storm sewer work at Blue Jay and Kansas Streets. All ramps and mainline roadways should remain open. Closure of intersection at Blue Jay Drive and Kansas St/152 for intersection improvements until end of July

June 11
The Missouri Department of Transportation will intermittently reduce northbound and southbound I-35 at Route 152 in Liberty, MO to one lane from 7:30 p.m. until 5:00 a.m., nightly beginning Tuesday, June 11 and continuing through Saturday, June 15 for setting bridge girders. Rolling stops will also be implemented to deliver girders to the work site. Motorists should expect delays and plan for alternate routes. All work is weather dependent. 

May 28 - UPDATED LANE CLOSURES for May 31 - June 3

Friday, May 31 @ 12:00 PM (noon):

  1. Closure of both left-turn lanes from MO-152 EB to I-35 NB on-ramp
  2. Closure of both left-turn lanes from MO-152 WB to I-35 SB on-ramp
  3. MO-152 EB reduced to one lane
  4. MO-152 WB reduced to one lane

Friday, May 31 @ 7:00 PM

  1. Closure of left turn lane from I-35 NB to MO-152 WB
  2. Closure of left turn lane from I-35 SB to MO-152 EB
  3.  I-35 NB reduced to one-lane
  4.  I-35 SB reduced to one-lane

Friday, May 31st by 10:00 PM 

  1. Closure of MO-152 EB at N Church Rd
  2. Closure of MO-152 WB at Conistor
  3. I-35 NB traffic routed up ramp
  4. I-35 SB traffic routed up ramp
  5. Complete bridge closure

Monday, June 3 by 5:00 am

  1. Demolition completed
  2. I-35 traffic routed back on mainline
  3. MO-152 limited access to I-35

May 31 - June 3

[From MoDOT press release] The Missouri Department of Transportation will close the Route 152 Bridge over I-35 in Liberty, MO beginning at 10 p.m. Friday, May 31 and will remain closed until Thursday, Sept. 19 for bridge replacement work. Motorists should expect delays and lane closures starting as early as 7:00 p.m. due to preparations that need to be taken prior to the demolition.

During the bridge demolition, all I-35 (northbound and southbound) traffic underneath the Route 152 Bridge will be detoured up and over the ramps beginning at 10 p.m. Friday, May 31 until 5 a.m. Monday, June 3 when the demolition work should be completed.

During demolition of the existing bridge and reconstruction of new bridges, motorists that do not need to cross the bridge will be able to access ramps, but will need to find alternate routes if their destination is on the opposing side of the bridge.

The is all part of a project to replace the Route 152 Bridge over I-35, make improvements to Kansas Street and Route 291; including adding wider lanes and additional turn lanes. It will also address bicycle and pedestrian needs along the corridor, and a multiple-use path along the south side of Route 152 and Kansas Street. May 21 - The Missouri Department of Transportation will close southbound lanes of Blue Jay Drive (south of Route 152) from 8:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 21 and again Wednesday, May 22 for utility work. As part of the closure, there will be no left turns from westbound Kansas St/Route 152 and no right turns from eastbound Kansas Street/Route 152.

All work is weather dependent.

April 23 - KCP&L will be installing a power line at the intersection of 291 and 152  and will require a short closure of the intersection and is planned for 10:15  - 10:30 a.m.April 18.

Week of April 21-27

  • The contractor plans to remove the permanent traffic signals and transition traffic control to the temporary traffic signals, expect short duration road closures with removal of traffic signal poles and police presence during transition from permanent to temporary signals
    • UPDATE APRIL 24:  The Missouri Department of Transportation will be conducting various power switches from existing signals to temporary signals from 8:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. daily beginning Wednesday, April 24 and continuing through Tuesday, April 30. This work will cause intermittent slowing of traffic. The following intersections will be impacted
      • Route 152/Kansas Street and Conistor – Wednesday, April 24 
      • Route 152/Kansas Street and Blue Jay Dr. – Thursday, April 25
      • Route 152/Kansas Street and Forrest Ave. – Friday, April 26
      • Route 152/Kansas Street and Route 291 – Monday, April 29
      • Route 152/Kansas Street and Clayview Dr. – Tuesday, April 30

         Due to possible outages, officers with the Missouri State Highway Patrol will be on-site directing traffic. All work is weather dependent.

  • Continued work with median removal and pavement installation along Kansas Street. 
  • The intersection of 291 and Kansas Street is planned to be closed Tuesday, April 23 for the installation of a relocated overhead power line.  Work is sensitive to weather, please be alert to the potential for changing times for the work. 
  • Water line installation along Kansas Street. 
  • Storm sewer work along Kansas Street. 
  • Placement of base rock for pavement at the acceleration and deceleration ramps on I-35 and 152.

Week of April 16

  • Contractors continue to install temporary traffic signals along Kansas Street.
  • The contractor will initiate pavement work at on- and off-ramps of I-35.
  • Work continues on bridge foundations, which will require periodic night time lane closures on I-35 and 152.
  • Paving of medians on Kansas Street will start this weekend and continue until complete.
  • Water line and storm sewer construction will start next week along Kansas Street.

April 10-11 - The Missouri Department of Transportation will close the inside lanes (nearest the barrier wall) of northbound and southbound I-35 at Route 152 from 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 10 through 5 a.m. Thursday, April 11 so crews can pour drilled shafts with the median.  Please find alternate routes as substantial delays are expected. All work is weather dependent. 

Week of April 1 - The contractor will continue work to remove the center medians along Kansas Street, which will result in periodic lane closures.  Working hours are 7 a.m. - 3 p.m. for eastbound traffic lanes and 7 a.m. to 4 p.m for westbound traffic lanes.  The contractor will be removing the medians and placing concrete pavement in the areas where the medians are removed.  Once the median removal has occurred the adjacent lane closures will remain in place until the concrete has cured.  The contractor is also planning to start preparations for the installation of temporary traffic signals. 

I-35 & Kansas Street Interchange: The contractor will continue grading work on the ramps and will start work on the bridge foundations.      

March 26 - Nov. - MoDOT will close various lanes of eastbound and westbound Route 152/Kansas St. between I-35 and Clayview Dr. occurring daily beginning Tuesday, March 26 and continuing through Friday, November 15 for median removal, signal removal and installation of temporary signals. All work is weather dependent.

March 21-22: Crews will close various lanes and ramps March 21-22.   

Crews will close the center ramp lane from Route 152 to northbound I-35 and the center ramp lane from Route 152 to southbound I-35 beginning at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 21 until 5 a.m. Friday, March 22 for ramp/shoulder work.

March 18-22: Expect various lane closures for the week of March 18-22             

Crews will reduce northbound I-35 to one lane between Pleasant Valley Rd. and the Route 291 Interchange nightly, beginning at 8 p.m. until 5 a.m. Monday, March 18 and again Tuesday, March 19 for base rock removal backfill and on-ramp shoulder work.

Crews will close various lanes of northbound I-35 between Pleasant Valley Rd. and the Route 291 Interchange beginning at 8 p.m. until 5 a.m. Wednesday, March 20 for pavement marking work.

Crews will close various lanes of southbound I-35 between Pleasant Valley Rd. and the Route 291 Interchange beginning at 8 p.m. until 5 a.m. Thursday, March 21 for pavement marking work.

Crews will close the right lane of northbound I-35 between Pleasant Valley Rd. and the Route 291 Interchange beginning at 8 p.m. until 5 a.m. Friday, March 22 for barrier wall replacement work. 

Scope of Project

In 2019-2020, the Missouri Department of Transportation, the City of Liberty and Kansas City - Shoal Creek TIF are partnering to make significant improvements to the I-35 / Kansas Street Corridor. 

The entire project is anticipated to be complete by Fall 2020. 

The improvements will include: 

  • Replacement of the bridge that spans I-35 
  • Street widening
  • Adding turn lanes. 
  • Adding a multiple-use path along the south side of Route 152 and Kansas Street, from MO-291 across the I-35 bridge.
  • Sidewalk along the north side along the south side of Route 152 and Kansas Street, from MO-291 across the I-35 bridge.

During the construction you will always have access to your favorite businesses in Liberty. There are a number of alternate routes that will get everyone where they need to go.

February 6 - Project Awarded to Miles Excavating

Mid-March - Removal of medians on Kansas Street

June - Removal of existing bridge that spans I-35

August - Work on south side of Kansas at Blue Jay complete

September - New Bridge Complete

Fall 2019 - Work on south side of Kansas at Conistor complete

Spring / Summer 2020 - Construction of improvements at MO-291 / Kansas Street intersection and north side of Kansas at Forrest, Blue Jay & Conistor

September 2020 - Anticipated Project Completion
