Did You Know?

  • Arts are good for local merchants. "The typical arts attendee spends $24.60 per person, per event, not including the cost of admission on items such as meals, parking, and babysitters. Attendees who live outside the county in which the arts event takes place spend twice as much as their local counterparts ($39.96 vs. $17.42)-valuable revenue for local businesses and the community." - Randy Cohen, VP of Research and Policy at Americans for the Arts, the nation’s advocacy organization for the arts
  • The Local Arts Index (a project of Americans for the Arts) contains extensive data to help "understand the breadth, depth and character of the cultural life of a community." For example, here is a small bit of arts data for Jackson County, Missouri:
Adult population’s share attending popular entertainment: 53.8%
Adult population’s share attending live performing arts: 31.7%
Expenditures on entertainment admission fees per capita: $22.55
Performing arts and events NPOs (nonprofit organizations) per 100,000 population: 7.42
