[ARCHIVED] Powell Family Art Exhibit Now at City Hall Gallery

Greg Powell, a 20 year veteran of the Liberty Police Department, has inherited his artistic talent from his father, Lonnie Powell, and his uncle, Robert Powell. Greg says "Throughout my life, art has always been present". Growing up, his father encouraged him to have other interests but he has always returned to art. "As a police officer now, I use my drawing to take a breath," he says. Greg works primarily in graphite on paper and likes the challenge of portraiture.

The paintings of Lonnie Powell are widely recognized in art circles, and his work is found in private collections such as Sprint, H&R Block, the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City and Arrowhead Stadium, to name a few. Lonnie studied at Lincoln University under James Dallas Parks and taught art for most of his career with the Kansas City Missouri School District.
Robert Powell, who lives in St. Louis, is a recognized sculptor whose works are in the permanent collections of the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art and the Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kansas. Robert Powell is the founder of the Portfolio Gallery and Education Center in St. Louis, which serves to educate, enrich lives and foster a greater awareness of American artists of African American heritage.

The exhibit is open to the public during normal business hours, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

A reception for the artists will be held in the Atrium Gallery at Liberty City Hall on March 7 from 5 to 6:30 pm. The public is invited to attend.
