[ARCHIVED] Call for Volunteers: Tree Pruning

TreeLiberty is looking for volunteers to help prune trees in the downtown area on February 19 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

RSVP to Helene Miller via cell: 721-8237 or Email:

Where: Join TreeLiberty members and other volunteers in the parking lot east of City Hall near Kansas and Leonard Streets.

Why is it important to prune our trees?
Proper pruning allows a young tree to develop a strong structure and a desirable form while cuts are small and can heal easily. If trees are appropriately pruned in their first decade, they will require little corrective pruning when they are mature and will be more resistant to ice and wind damage. Young tree care is a very cost effective tree care method for both cities and homeowners.

If you want to volunteer or if you have trees in your yard that need trimming, keep the following in mind:
Although TreeLiberty helps take care of street trees, property owners are responsible for maintaining and pruning trees on their property that overhang streets, right-of-ways and sidewalks.
Trees overhanging any street or right-of-way within the City should be pruned so that the branches do not obstruct the light from any street lamp or obstruct the view of any street intersection
Tree branches should be pruned so that they are 8 feet above the surface of sidewalk.
A clearance of 12 feet must be maintained over streets and alleys.
TreeLiberty is a group of volunteers that works in partnership with the City of Liberty, the Liberty School District, neighborhood associations, and others interested in helping trees in Liberty to helps care for Liberty's Community Forest which includes street, park and school trees.
