With spring arriving and with it storm season, the City of Liberty has made several major upgrades to the outdoor warning sirens. This year the City replaced four sirens, which were on the average of 30-40 years old. These sirens are located at Capitol Federal Sports Complex, Manor Hill Elementary School, Alexander Doniphan Elementary School and Gordon Street Water tower. Thanks to the Liberty Public School District we were able to maintain the same locations for two of these sirens and will be removing one off the roof of Doniphan School and moving another away from Manor Hill School.
Along with the new sirens, a new system has been installed that monitors all the sirens 24-hours a day and gives us the ability to test them silently and identify any possible issues. We will still continue to test the sirens on the first Wednesday of every month March-September.
Although all these are important safety improvements, the Liberty Fire Department would like to remind everyone that these sirens are outdoor warning sirens and that you may not hear them from inside your house. For alerts indoors, every home and business should have a NOAA Weather Radio. For more information and tips on tornado safety, visit https://www.libertymissouri.gov/2550/Tornado-Safety.
