Each year the Girl Scouts assign Community Action Projects to help make a significant impact on our environment. The 2009-2010 assignment for troop 3064 was “water” and to improve its quality. Realizing that there is a finite amount of water on Earth, they hope to help conserve clean water for future generations. When medications are poured out, thrown away, or flushed, they end up in water that drains through landfills. That water runs to our water sources, causing tiny amounts to potentially contaminate drinking water.
The Liberty Police Department offered the use of the lobby as a secure facility to house the drop-off box. The lobby is open twenty-four hours a day and is monitored by video.
The deposited medications will be regularly removed and incinerated, which pollution control experts agree is the safest solution. Federal guidelines recommend using community drug take-back programs to dispose of medications. The public is invited to the dedication ceremony for the new box.
